Do you think that social media has the potential to bring about real social change?

I think that social media has the potential to bring positive social changes and a positive impact on our world. As we all know about various types of social media tools and the advantages of their usage, we also know that the media is becoming more and more powerful. The influence of media is continuously and rapidly growing.
The latest example of the tragic event in Japan shows how essential, helpful, and informative the social media is. Through the social media websites such as Twitter, Facebook, or Yahoo, people are able access more quickly current updates on the situation in Japan. When logging into my e-mail account I also noticed that there was a link to Red Cross and people were able to access a variety of links to charities and make a donation for those who were victims of the cataclysm. Moreover, without an access to social media, I would not know about the details of this tragic event so quickly.
Today, people are using social media very effectively because they have instant access to information and news that those websites provide. They can also connect with family members and friends all over the world by using Facebook or Twitter. People may use those social media websites to express their feelings and share their thoughts on specific topics as well as make comments on what someone else said. As a result, users engage even more in the online interactions as it is very convenient and easy to use for people of all ages.
I believe that social media is a tool which is already used very efficiently by majority of people and it will continue to be used in the future, as it is a growing phenomena and a part of new technology. It has the potential to bring about real social change by its unlimited access and easy availability.

  1. I agree when you say that social media can bring about positive changes but it has also brought about tons of negative changes as well. We no longer communicate with each other face-to-face. Younger generations have lost the ability to talk to each other without hiding behind a computer. I just don't think that all change that social media has brought is positive.

  3. Very thoughtful post Sonal,

Social media technology is a great tool to bring awareness to the plight being experienced by those in Japan. It provides real-time updates to the situation, allowed for people to learn about the impending situation and take the necessary precautions. It also allows for family members to get in touch with loved ones in the area to help relieve their anxiety. The social media provides a very easy method to make donations to help out. Having said that, while it creates a great vehicle to have people pledge donations, don't you think it still takes the action of the people to physically hand over the money to make real change? In the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti there were billions of dollars pledged for relief and a lot of it was via text messaging; unfortunately, we are coming to learn that a large number of these people have not taken the action of physically handing over the money and in effect made an empty promise. What good is it to have millions of dollars pledged for help via the social media if nobody takes the action of physically handing over the money?

  4. I agree that it brings real change. I like your comment about being caught up with news and information. Through social media, we can quickly get information from one source to another instantly. Before we would have to wait for news to hear about something and then wait for another charity ad or phone call in order to help. Now we hear about a tragic event online and right next to it is a link to help those in need. It is nearly instant.
